Sps Corals touching each other: is it really that bad?
« on: December 18, 2011, 06:37:00 PM »
Ive got myself today 2 new sps colonies and gluing them to the rocks I though soon they will grow and have their branches touching neighboring ones.
Its on the top of the tank, so it will be only sps's.
I know many sites say that could be an issue, but ive seen so many tanks and more tanks of lots of sps growing wild and im sure they will eventually touch others around.
So my question is how bad is it?
Obviously i will always try to avoid the contact, but in case that happens is it a die issue?
The store i buy my corals from has so many together that they all look like a mount.

I don't think it is an issue with acro colonies.

I will post pictures of the new corals, as I am curious of what one of them is.
The other is a green slimer and let me tell you, what an appropriate name. I took it out of the water to glue it and it secreted so much goo, it looked like it came from inside my dogs mouth. :)

I've had corals touch and kill each other and I've seen others touch and nothing happens.  I also saw an amazing sps tank where branches had grown in strange angels to avoid each other.  Let me see if I can find a photo of this....

Seamonster,
If you can find the pic, it would be nice.
It is fascinating to me how far good tank water can be. When I bought the two pieces at the store, the tentacles were not out, and the owner said it was due to the fact they had just come in early that day.
So I took them home, detached them from their base, glued them to my rocks like I've done to the other sps's. Within 1 hour both pieces had all their tentacles out, and looked much better and more colorful than at the store...
I guess my fear of Sps being more delicate than other corals is indeed not so true. Today I believe its all about water quality and stability. Trying to keep sps in tanks set up less than 3 months is a waste of money. Once the tank is mature and things in place, sps's can be kept with no fear by the hobbyist.. That's my opinion

I'm glad this question is already on the forum , I have been getting really into the sps lately, I am turning the entire top of my aquascape to sps colonies,  and I have been wondering the same thing , Can they touch ?

I have purchased two acro colonies and they will be growing near each other. I have found online, people saying no they cant and others say its not a problem.

Of course I will avoid at all costs but does anyone have a good answer for this.

Here is a few pics of what I have started..

I think it's just like placing any other corals, and their temperaments.  Some species will fight, and some will not.  See what google can get you back with in terms of acro aggression.

I agree...its like cold war politics......some corals like canada to usa.....other like iraq to usa.  We put them close and watch them is how we do it.  Sometimes even mean corals get along in reefs together.
