Refugium vs Sump
« on: January 28, 2011, 07:00:28 AM »
Hey guys, maybe someone can explain to me in a more concise way what the pros and cons are of a refugium vs having a sump.  I know you can use either one with bigger setups, but why would someone choose one over the other, and vise versa?  Thanks!

Hey i would prefer refugiums over just a regular sump. Basically the difference is a refugium has lots more biological activity, growing important food sources for plant loving fish and corals, and its a more natural way of filtering the system ,add some macro algae and its a great way to reduce nitrates and algae in the aquarium. And sumps are just ment to filter water with filter pads ect.. and provide a place to put your skimmer in.

AH okay!! so it's mechanical filtration vs biological filtration, right?   Makes perfect sense!  Thanks!

Don't forget you can't put your main pump in a refugium. And a sump helps a lot with Aeration. As the water splashes into the sump. Refugium are usually added internally in the sump or externally as a secondary filter. In my refugium I don't have macro algae. I have a remote DSB cause my tank is BB. So in my case my refugium acts as more like a refuge for all the little Creatures to breed. Mine is also external which feeds directly into my main pump section. Or you can get a hang on back refugium with a closed loop system if you don't want a sump.

Hey Joe, the sumps are what people drill their tanks for, right?  and you don't do that for a fuge, correct?

No. You don't have to drill you tank for a sump. They make overflows which is a small box inside the tank and a small box outside the tank with a u tube to bring water from the inside box to the outside box. They work off a syphon. If it's setup properly it will never loose the syphon even when the power goes out or pump is shutoff.
Mine is kind of big they make smaller ones

A refugium is just added into a compartment in side the sump. Or added external to the tank.

okay, so a refugium can either be added to a sump, as another filtration medium... can you use the fuge part on it's own, or will you still have to have some kind of mechanical filtration device?    (pls excuse my inquisitive ignorance)   :P

If you want to have just a refugium. you would have to have a hang on back one. With a closed loop tank. The mechanical filter would be the power heads in the tank

mechanical filtration is not even recommended to reef tanks.  they become nitrate factories and compete with the tank itself. unless you clean the filter like twice a week.

Basically a sump is a place for you heater, skimmer, and fuge.  with a sump, your tank water level always stays the same.  wen water evaporates, your sump level goes down not your tank so you add top off water to the sump. another benefit is that a sump adds volume to your tank.  the bigger the water volume, the easier

you dont have to drill your tank but its much better if you do.

a fuge is basically a refuge for your pod which would otherwise be gobbled up by your fish i your display tank. fuge also has micro algae which consumes nitrates

A skimmer is mechanical filtration. Your talking about bioballs in a wet/dry filter which is a type of media
