Oops. I did it again
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:09:04 PM »
well I guess its been over 6 months since I changed my ro/di filters. I started to notice a little cyano and some HA. a couple water changes and some vacuming. a little bit of brushing and scrubing of the rocks it was pretty much gone. No big deal right.... Worng.... a couple days later  a little cyano and some HA. thinking nothing of it I cleaned some more and did another water change. Ok so I got it all this time..... worng again. a couple days later HA everywhere. at this point i did not know what else to do. so knowing  excess neutrients cause this problem it must be my water. so i pulled my ro unit out from under my bathroom sink and of corse the filters have all changed color. once again I forgot to perodically check my filters. my tank is now covered in HA and a little cyano. I ordered my filters over this past weekend and should have them soon. This all happened within a week. Its amazing how fast things go bad in these tanks from one stupid mistake. So this hole time I think im doing the right thing I was only causing more of a problem. Oops!!!!
moral of this story.... CHECK YOUR FILTERS......REGULARLY

If there isn't a thousand things that can go wrong with a reef tank. Do you have a TDS meter Joejoe? I check my RO water every time I fill buckets. I would do lots of WC's once you get your filters installed. Crappy thing about algae is...it's so easy to get and so dam hard to get rid of, kinda like gaining weight and trying to loose it. Good luck Joejoe, keep us posted as always :)

TDS meter is a easier way to know when your filters are getting exhausted. I have a Hanna hand checker, quick and easy to use, $40.

Remember Joejoe. all fish are $5 unless they are big ones, then they are $10. Corals are $6 - $12 depending on the colour, more colourful = more expensive! The equipment lasts forever so it is always a sound investment, regardless of cost, besides you can always sell it for what you paid for it, maybe more. As for the products you dose, they never run out if the same container just keeps getting refilled, they last forever...

But honestly... the joy reefing brings you is worth whatever you have to pay for it...priceless!
