Where do I go from here?
« on: July 12, 2012, 01:49:52 PM »
Hey Reefers,

It's been awhile! I recently moved and tore down my 3-4 month old 29G. I had a DSB with approx. 20-30 lbs of LR. I am now settled in to my new home and am thinking of going BB with less LR. I am looking for any suggestions and tips to begin this new process. I have so LR left over from my initial setup but it has dried out, can I still use it to cycle my new setup? Also what type of inverts and corals would thrive in a BB setup? Thanks for all your help and guidance in advance!

welcome back rook. you absolutely CAN use dry rock! you will however need to seed it with some live rock. BB tanks are cool, and as far i know all corals will just as well in one, as the other provided the right conditions are met. encrusting corals will do good on the glass bottom. I recommend using a refugium for this kind of set up.

Hey Kid,

Thanks for the reply I guess I will spend a few bucks on some LR then, lol. As for the Refugium, I have a 29G Nano Cube and accompanying stand any ideas on how to retrofit this type of tank/setup with one?

I would say get as much rock as you can get. Without the DSB the more rock the better.

With the BB set up you're loosing bio-filtration maybe look at some bio-plates on BRS's website?

If you choose BB you can also look into seachem matrix. I've been using it for a while now

I've gone BB in my pico with matrix and bio pellets. So far so good. No issues.

I also put matrix in my sump for the 20 gallon. I give them a good stir once a week or so. I have a sand bed but not much live rock so I thought I would add the matrix just in case.
