Thanks, it still needs so much work, just a new tank, 3 months old. Long way to go.

The DA Reefkeeper Lite is well just that, lite. I have it running my temp., both fan and heater with the probe it comes with, it keeps the temp pretty much bang on, no complaints there. I also have it running my lights, basic on and off control. I guess it can do more functions but that's all I need from it right now. For $130 Im satisfied.

God...I just bought another Vertex Illumilux LED fixture, 50% 450nm (royal blue) , 50% 470nm (blue) for my display. Going to take off the T5 actinic fixture sitting on the top of my other two Vertex fixtures and put it on my sump with 10,000K bulbs in it. The new Vertex fixture will bring my wattage up to about 110 watts, all Cree XP-E 3 watt emitters. Okay, my display lighting is a little over the top for a 20g but this new fixture will give me more of the 450-470nm range, a bluer look but more important for Zooanthellae. I will post a pick when its up and running over the tank.

Didn't you think that 120 watts of LED's over my 75 gallon was a lot lol?  Better get some sunglasses for those Chromis haha  :P

Yes I know  ::)... I'm thinking to use the actinic strip for 2 hours before and after main lights. I think the 3 fixtures might be too much if they are on at the same time. I am also thinking to reduce the main light duration, knock it down by 2 hours. So 2 hours actinic > 7 hours main lights > 2 hours actinic > then just moon light (very dim). From what I have been reading lately, algae loves 6500K, not 50,000K (450nm). Corals benefit from the actinic light even though it does not appear bright to our eyes.

Whats the break down on your lights in Kelvin rating and how many hours do you keep you lights on for?

If I ran mine all at once it would break down to  18 X 3w 450nm , 6 X 3w 470nm , 12 X 3w 7000K all Cree XP-E.
36 emitters X 3 watts = 108 watts total. Yes, probably too much for a 20 gallon.

My 75 has 2 120 watt fixtures. Each fixture has 30 x 3w 10000k and 25 x 3w 450nm(both Chinese LEDs).  Each emitter is running closer to 2 watts though.  So 240 watts total.

My 8 gallon is all Cree XRE with 9 x 3w Cool White(7000k or 10000k?) and 9 x 3w 450nm. These are powered by a 1050mA duel dimmable driver.  I have the whites running at about 50% and the blues at about 60%.  About 30 watts right now, could turn it up to about 54 watts(way to much for 8 gallons)

Both tanks are on the same light cycle.  Blues = 12pm - 10pm     Whites = 1pm - 9pm

Sadly, the company I ordered the 8 gallons' LEDs from is no longer in business.  I just visited their website and there is now a message stating that they closed their doors for good last week. Bummer  :(

Thanks for the details, Looks like we are running about the same % of whites vs blue and for the same period each day. Most companies seem to be going with 50/50 white/blue variations. I am wondering if it is for aesthetic reasons mainly or it is considered the best mix for marine tanks. Ecotech's Radion is adding the green and red spectrum to their fixtures, I believe it is more for aesthetic reasons, make those corals pop. I have heard and read that green and red spectrums are not used by most marine life. Green and red are used by mainly algae and plants. Stemming the question...pleasing to the eye or to the coral? I'm sticking to science and sticking with only the spectrums that can be utilized by what I want to grow in my tank. The Radion is an expensive RBG LED light that can be tweaked by the user simply by mixing the colours to achieve an eye popping spectacle in the tank. I wonder if users who choose more green and red end up with more algae, cyanobacteria, or other problems, time will tell.

I'm willing to bet that if users begin to add more red light they will see an increase in nuisance algaes...  If you've ever seen an indoor LED grow lamp they are almost all red, with a few UV's in there as well.  The green light I'm not so sure, as plants primarily reflect green light I don't think they will utilize it so it most likely wont be benificial to corals or algaes... most likely just for our eyes...
