Heat asside I don't believe LEDs are any safer then other methods of lighting. They all have electricity in them.

I don't mean to say you are wrong but I have looked into Led's for my tank, a couple of things I would say are, not all tanks or corals will live with Led's, the cost thing is not as they say, saving big percentages on power is not always true to be honest, some of the bigger brighter Led unit's today are up with the halides for wattage so no cost saving at all!

I also think it's to quick to jump and give lots of great results as they have not been used for that long, as said they are ok for some things and shallow aquariums you can get away with them, don't forget the facts they give about how much PAR you get at a certain point, this point can be very small hence the corals around it may not get anywhere near what has been quoted!

The fact you made this statement "Above all, LED aquarium lights are very safe and they cannot put your pets or even you at any risk" is not true at all, as already said they have power and this can be dangerous but the other issue is the corals can suffer if the light is not right, along with all other types of lighting to!

Ahh the LED light discussion it like hasnt died yet.  The forums/youtube are loaded with the last 12 months of news on them.  The first LED topics seemed to be the expensive answer to hot running halides, then they seemed to be the best for spectrum, shimmer and par depth issues.  Well then we got into color changing, wow back to the 70's right.  As of late the bigger discussions are revolving around cost savings with draw of current and less bulb expense verse the cost of the equipment.

Either way you go, or side you choose each have things that the other doesn't have, for example in Minnesota in January a metal halide running saves you the need to run heaters as much, and certainly in the dark of winter the metal halide is proven true to reach deep into the tanks.  But as opposite example in the summer time LED's save on the chiller issues and certainly the highend LEDs are putting controlable features into the systems and lots of people are liking it.

We see LEDs as growing in the market and due to longer lifespan and modules coming out that are very programmable they are probably going to continue the trend to dominate but we are sure that halides will also continue in the industry for they have great function especially in large deep water reefs.

Our suggestion try both and see which you like best, we run in the winter lots of halides here in the cold, then use more LEDs in the summer and we have combo tanks too with both running.  These are just fun thoughts of ours verses harsh-statement rebuttals on one side vs another.  That is what makes this forum rock one can express there favorites, others can suggest reasons for different favorites along with reasons why.
