The trend seems to be DIY LED's these days, I think it's great, and know the average reefer can create a better LED reef lighting than a big company like Marinelife (did I just say that?). It's true and for half the price or less maybe. I for one am not so talented so I bought mine already made. I think that's still okay to do and still be considered a true reefer....right? I am more of a "modifier" of equipment rather than "creator." If you (and I bet you can) make your own, do it.
I think, IMO, a cluster, in close proximity, resembles more so, the light emitted in nature by the sun. However, the sun moves throughout the day, lighting the ocean bottom from different angles, just not all at the same time. A moving intense cluster of light (LED) moving from one end of the tank to the other over a 8 hour period on a motorized track, then a gradual dimming to moonlight would be my LED project. If I had the talent and time to do it. Did I mention the option for rain? LOL.
