You gotta remember that he has been reefing for a long time and been slowly moving away from the bio-balls and most of the times he uses real ocean water which i think is awesome.  He was doing crazy stuff at first i just like watching for the variety of tanks he works with.

48x24x24 is 80 gallons
[/quote]

you did your math wrong 48x24x24 is 120g not 80 LxWxH divided by 231

you can save more money building it yourself i run 48 cree 3w over my 90g 24 white 24 blue i think the formula for figuring out how many led's is LxW divided by 20 for soft coral 10 for sps the guy that built my led's i think runs 96 cree 3w over his 120 shallow but they are not at full power because its a shallow tank only 16in tall i ordered mine from rapidled.com you could prolley call there costumer service and they could help you out with all the details for how many you would need and what not. for a 24in tall tank i run 60 degree optics on mine the best thing to do is too buy the amount of led's rapidled.com says you need them get the dimable drivers and do turn them up or down and measure the amount of light with i think its call a par meter and do what you need for proper light for corals. also i wouldnt suggest buying a diy kit inless you know how to soder or inless you know someone who knows how to. here is some a youtube series on building led's for a aquarium. its 1 through 4.

ist that our own limpitreef?
Yes, thats me. I have to check in here more often.
If you have the time and are handy then the DIY LED's are the way to go. I have several ready made fixtures and the par reading just do not compare to the DIY 3 watt Cree setups.
If you don't think you can DIY and do not have anyone to help you out then I would recommend doing a lot of research into the ready made fixtures. I do not want to mention names but some of them have terrible par readings.

Part 2 of my series will be posted in the next couple of days.
Till then.....Happy Reefing!

my new led fixture is going to be 160 leds :/  thats going to be a long day project
i'd do 2/1 (2 blue 1 white  )   i would mix the colours like blue and royal blue, and cool white and warm white

My first LED light I built like that and was very disappointed in the color it produced with the mixed LED's. The tank looked more green than blue. My mix was 12 blue, 28 RB, 10 cool white and 10 warm white. I ended up pulling all but 4 of the blue LED's and replaced all of the warm whites with cools. I do prefer a more blue 20k look to my tank though. 2:1 blue over white is the ratio I prefer also, just not the regular blue Cree's.
Happy Reefing!

I also built a DIY LED lights for My 140 liters aquarium (~53 gallons).
I'm using 14 XP-G White (6500K), 24 XP-E RoyalBlue, 10 XP-E Blue and 6 UV Purple 405mn LED's.
XP-G LEDs powered at 1000m, XP-E and UV at 700mA.
Using dimmable drivers ELN-60-48D for White, RoyalBlue and Blue LED's, and for UV Purple LED's I use small non dimmable driver ELP8X3LS.

yeah i know what your saying, i may just go with the the same leds i have on my nano tank,  it has just cool white and royal blues,  it has a nice purple look.   but im adding 8 more royal blues to the nano on thursday, so i will see how i like it then!

im not sure about me using the warm whites on the frag tank yet though, because the colour is not so white.
